The region around Annapolis Royal and Founders House is steeped in very early Canadian history with Fort Anne, Canada’s first administered National Historic Site, within sight. For someone who loves to get a sense of place, the story of Fort Anne is riveting.
Over the centuries, the Annapolis Valley became the most important growing region in the Maritimes…renowned for its tree fruits especially apples and now for its spectacular wines. With the arrival of energetic chefs like Chris Pyne, the dining scene is exploding.
“Being in Annapolis Royal, which is one of the best growing regions in Canada, is such a privilege in my opinion because I can produce some of the best food in the country using the food provided by all the
agricultural people around me,” says Pyne.
His menus vary from fabulous-casual to refined-dining. The ‘Untraditional seafood chowder” a velvety potato-based veloute with Digby scallops, smoked haddock and mussels just won the Taste of Nova Scotia Chowder showdown or you can have a buttermilk fried chicken salad spiked with Dragon’s Breath, my favourite blue cheese in Canada. There are always Nova Scotian oysters and lobster may come in a perfect lobster roll or, at dinner, whole with smoked potato puree and a citrus buerre blanc.
